Steingrímur Eyfjörð (b. 1954) has been an active visual artist since the 1970s. His works span a wide range of media, materials, and subjects. Since 1977 he has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in many collaborative shows, both in Iceland and abroad. These include a major exhibition of his works at the National Gallery of Iceland in 2006 and his representation of Iceland at the Venice Biennale in 2007 with The Golden Plover Has Arrived (Lóan er komin), a series of thirteen independent works.
He was named Municipal Artist of Hafnarfjörður in 2017, received the DV Cultural Award for Visual Art in 2002, and was nominated for the Carnegie Art Award in 2004 and 2006. Most recently, Eyfjörð was nominated for his exhibition Classification at Reykjanes Art Museum. One of the largest exhibitions ever held by the museum, it presented a wide selection of works from his career alongside recent pieces, structured into eight categories: The Intangible, The Inheritance, World of Women, Critique, God’s Own Country, Kellingin, Decode, and Comix, spanning from 1975 to 2021.
Steingrímur studied at the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts from 1971 to 1975 and in 1978 under Magnús Pálsson and Robert Filliou. He continued his studies at Edinburgh University in 1977 and pursued graphics at Ateneum Suomen Kuvataideakatemian Koulu in Helsinki between 1979 and 1980. From 1980 to 1983, he undertook graduate studies in new media at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
